Privacy Policy
Effective May 17, 2026
Open Ink is a quiet AI-powered journaling app built by an independent developer. This policy explains what data we collect, how we use it, and the choices you have. By using Open Ink, you agree to the practices described here.
What we collect
Only what's needed to run the journal and personalize prompts to you:
- Account — email address; optional display name.
- Journal entries — your text, mood, tags, and optional voice transcriptions.
- Personality model — your answers to the optional Big Five baseline, Learning Modes, Enneagram, and Attachment quizzes; the free-form "About you" note if you write one.
- Optional birth details — date, time, and city, if you choose to add them for sharper prompt personalization. Skippable.
- Subscription state — receipts from Apple, surfaced through RevenueCat.
- Device data — APNs push token, app version, locale, time zone.
How your data is protected
Sensitive fields — your email, name, optional birth details, free-form "About you" note, and every journal entry — are encrypted at rest using AES-256-GCM with a key held server-side. All data in transit is TLS 1.2+.
We do not sell your data. We do not share it with advertisers. We do not train AI models on your entries. The personalization that tunes your daily prompts uses only your account's data and is not used to improve any generic model.
How we use AI
Daily reflection prompts, journal feedback, weekly synthesis, and on-demand period reflections are generated by Anthropic's Claude models. When the AI needs context to personalize for you, we send:
- The relevant entries (for synthesis and feedback)
- A short summary of your personality model (trait bands, not raw quiz scores)
- Your free-form "About you" note, if you wrote one
- Your optional birth-derived archetypes, if you provided birth details
Anthropic processes this content to generate the response and does not retain it for model training under our agreement. We never send your email, name, or any identifier Anthropic could use to recognize you across sessions.
Push notifications
With your permission, Open Ink sends one daily reflection notification at a time you choose. The notification body contains your day's reflection prompt. You can turn notifications off any time from your iPhone Settings → Notifications → Open Ink.
Your choices
- Edit or delete entries — from inside the app, any time.
- Export your archive — Profile → Export entries (Markdown).
- Edit your "About you" note — Insights → Personal Profile.
- Delete your account — Profile → pencil icon → gear → Delete Account. Type DELETE to confirm. This permanently removes your account and every entry, with no recovery.
- Manage your subscription — iPhone Settings → tap your name → Subscriptions → Open Ink.
Third parties we use
- Anthropic (Claude) — AI prompt and reflection generation.
- Apple — Sign in with Apple, App Store subscription payments, APNs push delivery.
- RevenueCat — subscription state syncing.
- Resend — transactional emails (password reset, account deletion).
- Railway — server and database hosting.
We share only the data each provider needs to perform its function. None of them receive your journal entries for advertising or training.
Children
Open Ink is not directed to children under 13. We do not knowingly collect data from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us information, contact us and we'll remove it.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the app evolves. The effective date at the top reflects the most recent change. Material changes will be announced in the app before they take effect.
